Just like windows and OS, your camera may need a software or firmware update. The firmware updates might fix glitches in focusing or pairing with newer lens, allow the camera to pair or send files to newer operating systems on phones or commuters or even add new technology like better face and animal recognition. Often times a firmware update is needed to use a newer or longer lasting battery with your camera.

· When should I update the firmware? First determine what version of the firmware your camera already has to determine if you indeed need to update it. Try not to be the first to update your firmware to ensure the new firmware does not have unforeseen glitches. Perhaps wait 48 hours.
· Should I upgrade the firmware? Read the benefits of the new firmware. Some firmware updates may not even apply to you. Some may only apply to a specific type of memory card or specific lens you do not own. If so no rush or need to update the software. However sometimes the update is game changing like improved focus, allowing you to use new products like lenses, adaptors, and batteries. Always read full description of the update benefits.
· Are there times I should not update the firmware? Occasionally firmware updates make it hard to download directly from your camera on older computer operating systems, talk wirelessly to older flash systems, and print wirelessly. That is why it is important to read everything before updating. Certain equipment does not allow you to remove an update without it being returned to the factory
· How to I update the firmware? Very carefully and follow the manufacturers direction perfectly. Make sure you on downloading firmware from the manufacturer’s website. Your camera battery needs to be fully charged battery. You must format the memory card you are using for the firmware download in your camera not in the computer. If you have an option to use a memory card to load the firmware, choose that method over the wireless method. You do not want the wireless connection to be lost during firmware installation. Leave your camera alone while the firmware is being loaded. Losing power on the camera prior to the completion of the firmware upgrade is a huge mistake and can cost you a trip to the camera repair shop.
· How about my lenses do they need firmware updates as well? Yes, some lenses do. Often times lenses are more difficult to update that firmware yourself then cameras.
